| During the production of The New American Revolution in the mid-80’s, the field crew had an opportunity to video tape The Children of War Tour at the United Nations Building in New York. Young war survivors from around the globe had gathered to tell the world what it was like to be a victim of political, religious, and cultural violence.
As their horror stories unfolded before the cameras, the hush of disbelief in the room was paralytic to all but the speaker. The oppressive weight of shirked responsibilities allowing these atrocities to have been committed upon little children was crushing our collective faith in mankind.
Following the UN meeting, a reception for the children was held at another location and featured key-note speaker (then) Bishop Desmond Tutu. In his speech, he reminded the citizens of the United States that, “America, is after all, the leader of the free world, and what happens here sets the example for the rest of the world.”
It’s difficult to imagine how quickly his statement has been negated by our actions (or lack of). America has given up its leadership position by proxy and outsourced personal responsibility as freedoms we didn’t even know we had are disappearing without reasonable discourse—not to mention our previous global friends.
More than twenty years have passed since that heart-wrenching experience with The Children of War. My own two were then of the same ages as some of the victims, and yet their faces were too easily inter-changeable in the “what ifs.” Realizing that speculation in this regard is futile, yet something we may all have to face in the near future, I’ve started a list of why war sucks and will add to it until we come to our adult senses.
Why War Sucks (Thirteen—and counting—reasons to stop It!)
One
War hastens the species’ genetic decline and certain extinction.
Two
Wars don’t solve long-range issues—proven by almost 4,000 years of constant combat history.
Three
Wars prosper killers while women and children pay the tab, tip, and taxation without representation.
Four
War is totally hypocritical in religious (especially Christian) teachings and principles. However, women constitute approximately 80% of protestant congregants.
Five
War is not inevitable—but rather an exclusive masculine mindset that is accepted and adopted by both genders rather than challenged, curtailed, or corrected.
Six
Wars glorify and reward exclusively male gender supremacy, thereby prostituting, warping, or otherwise attempting to invalidate the feminine reality that allowed their existence.
Seven
Wars destroy precious habitat for humanity and all other species, hastening extinction by potentially catastrophic rates.
Eight
Wars are acceptable “games” with dispensable rules ultimately leading to sadistic and perverse cruelty by which the victims have enabled the victors.
Nine
Wars breed revenge. Women are insane to trust religious, political and economic systems created and ruled by men for the almost-exclusive benefit of men who insist that sacrificing our children will eventually bring peace.
Ten
War has become God in the world, and peace has been trumped once again by profits.
Eleven
War-mongers and tyranny triumph when good people do nothing…
Twelve
Wars destroy life-givers, and women must reclaim their evolutionary human rights heretofore usurped by men gods.
Thirteen
War haunts the warrior soul, and warps the collective mind forever.
