| Does anyone out there have the audacity to offer a pamphlet, password, pedagogy, permit, plan, platitude, pill, poem, prayer, prescription, principle, process, product, program, or proverb that will erase my memory of seeing the face of a beautiful black woman in Africa whose ears and lips were cut off and her nose almost destroyed by militants in her village? For sure, none of the above to which we swear allegiance could possibly explain, overlook, repair or forgive the sadism that has replaced sanity among men and boys in today’s world.
If “erasers” and expirations don’t work, and imbalances in global gender rights continue to escalate, the only other effective feminine gift we might consider invoking is our intention, or will of mind—as these brave sisters did:
African women in a remote village got so tired of being beaten up by their spouses and tribal laws that they moved out to the more relative safety of the bush. The children, mostly girls and babies, went or were sent with them while the boys stayed with the men.
Certain that the women would return, the men stubbornly did women’s work (because they had to) in order to feed themselves and their hallowed sons. One male interviewed stated vehemently that no man would interfere with another man’s beating of his woman—that if she were being beaten it was because she deserved it.
But it wasn’t long until the men sent their representative to bring the women to their senses and back to their huts. By that time however, the women had built their own shelter, planted gardens, fenced their domesticated animals, and produced saleable goods for locals and tourists traveling nearby routes. The women bravely refused to return, and threatened the tribe’s messenger with sticks, rocks, and utensils. He fled with their wrath back to the awaiting men.
Soon, the men sent elders, chiefs, and various other posses to force the women to return—but to no avail. The fortified presence of the women coupled with their intention not to return drove the “lawful captors” away.
At last in desperation for resources, the men attempted to duplicate the women’s marketing success by making their own trinkets and usurping the potential customers before they reached the women’s wares. Evidently, word got out along the dusty, well-worn routes because shoppers passed the male hawkers and purchased from the women. As the documentary ended, the courageous women were obviously safer, healthier and happier on their own than they had been during their attempts to survive traditional tribal servitude and unwarranted abuse.
Women in my society have also and will continue to resort to the same kind of distancing from the infallible fists of the male gods. While removal of us and our offspring from danger should be paramount, the financial and emotional cost is enormous for all concerned. But unfortunately, the “good guys” have let the “bad guys” take over our children’s today and their future tomorrows.
The long-term effects of societies without the framework of balanced gender roles and familial stability may not be to our collective liking or benefit in a few decades. Yet it takes 100,000 years for a change in human nature to occur, according to Charles Galton Darwin in his book, The Next Million Years. Are women willing to wait that long before any hope of change in attitude towards them surfaces? Billions of bruises just flashed through my mind, so I think not. But rather than harming or killing, wouldn’t it make more sense and be easier for men to modify their outdated behaviors, hopefully to include the well-being of all others?
Yet one cannot begin to have an intelligent conversation in any language when the masculine shields of gender or religious myths, taboos, exclusions, and invalidations of the feminine are staunchly entrenched in their so-called thinking. It’s really sad that the testosterone kings are so stuporational as to refuse to entertain the idea that there might be a better way. One would think they’d prefer a harmonious partner rather than an unwilling possession.
Aside from the potential prize of harmonious gender existence, the stakes are extremely high and the odds even higher that the guys will be unable to ante up to the fact that the genes they’re killing off will ultimately lead to the degeneration of the genetic code. From their phalluses will come our future generations of retarded, deformed, mutants; or far worse— more sadistic, dumbed-down militants.
If women cannot muster their own inherent courage, compassion, cooperation, resources, intelligence, and voices, then there is no hope for female evolution—only further devolution at the hands of good old boys and big-brother bullies.
Contingency Plan B: If all else fails, try to insert parity, buy a plunger, take a purgative, and prepare to write your prologue on the blood-spattered pages of our pathetically cruel paternalistic world history.
